Paper Abstract:
|
The paper is based on results from an ongoing study on motives for playing electronic games at all, i.e. the media choice of games, and choosing specific gaming applications of diverse genres. Starting with an outline of differences of media choice theories and game-specific theories, it prepares the basis of a conclusion thereof in order to derive a more comprehensive understanding of gaming behaviour. The theoretical concepts are tested by empirical research across gamers in Germany, differentiating gender, age and other personal characteristics like the social background. The study shows a correlation between motivations and these external and internal factors of gamers. However, no significant difference has been found between females and males, and a correlation of playing specific games (e.g. shooter games) with a lack of social support or weak personality was not confirmed. The motivational footprints of the chosen games derived from this analysis may guide the development of new games by elaborating distinct patterns of motivations of successful games. |
